CE Policy Unit Roundtable: Advancing Hong Kong’s Space Technology Development and Supporting the Space Economy
The Chief Executive’s Policy Unit (CEPU) hosted a roundtable meeting on January 19, 2025 (announced/published around that date; related discussions stemmed from a January 14 gathering referenced in media), titled “Advancing Hong Kong’s Space Technology Development and Supporting the Space Economy.”
The event gathered academics (including Prof Quentin Parker from HKU Space Research Laboratory), industry representatives, investors, and government officials to explore Hong Kong’s role in the booming global space economy—projected to grow from US$630 billion in 2023 to US$1.8 trillion by 2035.
Key discussions focused on data-driven “NewSpace” (low-orbit satellites, reusable rockets, space data applications), sustainable space practices (debris management), and leveraging Hong Kong’s strengths in finance, law, and as a “super connector” to align with China’s 15th Five-Year Plan and national aerospace goals.
Participants affirmed the 2025 Policy Address directions, including InnoHK space centers and over HK$100 million in R&D investments, with consensus on enhancing research, investment, and services to support China’s space ambitions and “going out” strategy.
