Does Space Life Only Look Easy? “Tiangong Classroom: Hong Kong and Macao Special Edition” Launches
The “Tiangong Classroom: Hong Kong and Macao Special Edition” space lecture event kicked off on the 9th, with teachers and students from multiple primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong watching the live broadcast. This included Tsuen Wan Public Ho Chuen Yiu Memorial College, the alma mater of Hong Kong astronaut Lai Ka-ying.
Our reporter at the scene invited Professor Yao Zhonghua, Director of the Space Laboratory at the University of Hong Kong (HKU), to explain the scientific and technical support required behind the seemingly easy and ordinary daily lives of astronauts in the space station.
Professor Yao stated that while the daily necessities—clothing, food, housing, and transportation—of astronauts in the space station look effortless and routine, they actually rely on powerful technological capabilities as a safeguard.
Unlike the environment on Earth, space lacks the protection of a thick atmosphere. The safety risks posed by high-energy matter require space station facilities to provide crucial protection for the astronauts.
Beyond safety guarantees in the space environment, communication and the stable orbital operation of the space station also require immense technical support.
Professor Yao emphasized that it is precisely these “invisible parts” in the daily footage that ensure astronauts can maintain a lifestyle in space that closely resembles life on the ground.
Drawing a comparison with the historical development of China’s manned spaceflight, Yao pointed out that during early missions, astronaut Yang Liwei was confined to a very narrow space with heavily restricted movement. Today, astronauts can live and conduct activities in the space station in a way that is much closer to normal daily life. This reflects the rapid advancement and technical support capabilities of China’s aerospace sector.
