Saturn’s asymmetric aurorae surprise space scientists

A study led by Professor Zhonghua Yao from the University of Hong Kong discovered that Saturn’s aurorae are asymmetric, shifting to one side rather than forming perfect polar rings. Published in Nature Communications, the team analyzed archival data from NASA’s Cassini spacecraft (2004–2010). They mapped 67 particle-entry “cusps” in Saturn’s magnetic shield. Unlike Earth, where these gateways face the Sun at local noon, Saturn’s entry points shift toward the dusk/evening side. This displacement is driven by Saturn’s rapid 10.5-hour rotation and internal plasma supplied by its moon, Enceladus.
