Strategy, soft power, vigilance boost city’s academic ascendancy

Hong Kong has achieved a remarkable milestone, with five of its universities ranking in the global top 100 in the 2026 Times Higher Education and QS World University Rankings. According to Prof Quentin Parker, this success stems from strategic internationalization, sustained government investment in research infrastructure, and the city’s unique role as a superconnector between the Chinese mainland and the global academic community.

The universities drive Hong Kong’s transition to a knowledge-based economy, enhance soft power, and attract international talent. However, maintaining this position requires vigilance: balancing global rankings with local and national needs, safeguarding academic autonomy, deepening mainland integration while preserving distinctiveness, and diversifying funding sources. Complacency must be avoided to sustain openness and excellence.
