About

The HKU Laboratory for Space Research (LSR) engages research in the following areas (1) Space Science including remote sensing of the Earth, atmospheric science, magnetosphere, near Earth environment, and the interaction between the solar wind and the Earth; (2) Planetary Sciences and study of solar system objects (3) High Energy Astrophysics and (4) Late Stage Stellar Evolution – both using astronomical observations from satellite-based telescopes.

On the educational side, we anticipate new general courses to be offered in various areas of space science and more specialized courses will be offered in the Department of Physics and Department of Earth Sciences. In the longer term when there are sufficient personnel, we plan to offer space science as a major in our Science program and tie-in experiential learning opportunities to space centres in mainland China, Europe, and the USA.

The LSR will also engage in public outreach events. We already have a track record of running successful outreach events including holding the Science Corner in Astrobiology in the Hong Kong Science Museum in 2010-2011, and the public viewing of the Venus transit which attracted over 10,000 members of the public in 2012. Similar events on other topics in space science will be held in the future.
